Eye Exams & Keeping Your Eyes Safe During The Summer

Summertime sunshine washes our cold blues away but brings issues of its own. Where the blinding snow was our greatest enemy in winter, the sun took its place. We often overlook the truth in favor of warm sunny rays, but the truth will catch up with us in the end. Though the sun brings blissful happiness, the UV rays are dangerous to our eyes. While we feast our sight on the bright horizon, these rays deteriorate our vision.

To counteract and combat the sun’s beams, we suggest taking proper precautions and keeping up with regular eye exams. Keep reading for ways to protect your eyes against harmful UV rays.

Protective Measures

  1. Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses should be your first line of defense when trying to block out the sun’s UV rays. Make sure the sunglasses are big enough to block light from all angles, including from the sides of the frame. Also, the sunglasses should be anti-glare (polarized) and either a 90% UVB or 60% UVA protection level. The sunglasses should be labeled as such and are ideal for outdoor environments.

  1. Wear a Hat

Although sunglasses are the first step, they typically cannot block all the sun’s rays. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will step in where the sunglasses fail. The hat will block any light that still filters through, protecting your eyes. Additionally, this will help deter any sunburn which would otherwise color your face and scalp.

  1. Eye Drops

Though the sun’s UV rays are your greatest enemy in summer, dry air can also be harmful. When your eyes are dry, they can feel irritated, causing you to rub them. Scratching your eyes will irritate them further and tear the surface of your eye if dirt is trapped there. To avoid this, use moisturizing eye drops whenever your eyes feel dry.

  1. Goggles

Another irritant primarily encountered during summer is pool and lake water. This water can have bacteria floating around, which could pose problems for your eyes. Not to mention, the chlorine in pools has unsafe chemicals for your eyes. To keep water out of your eyes, wear goggles when swimming. Wearing goggles will also stop sunscreen from running into your eyes, preventing eye irritation.

  1. Eye Exams

Lastly, keep regular eye appointments with your eye doctor to ensure your eyes are in the healthiest state possible. These visits should be scheduled yearly, though extra appointments should be made if you have any concerns.
