Summer Eye Protection & Transition Lenses

Be Spec-tacular!

Around this time of year, we often hear the saying, “Life is better at the beach.” We couldn’t agree more. Nothing says summer like plopping on the sand and reaching for your favorite summertime book, only to realize that nothing, not even that huge umbrella that you find yourself sitting under, will shield you from the glaring light.

Transition Lenses

Many of us are all too familiar with this hassle. One way to deal with the ongoing inconvenience is to wear glasses with photochromic or “transition lenses.” These special lenses darken in the sun then lighten when you go inside. While they have been around for decades, glass lenses were your only material choice and grey lens were the only choice of color. The following are some of the advantages to transition glasses:

Advantages:
  • Convenience. These glasses can be used under most circumstances, whether indoors or outside.
  • Continuous UV protection. So what if you forgot your sunglasses or didn’t pack them for a ski trip?
  • Won’t get lost as easily. You (or your child) are less likely to lose glasses when you only have one pair, not two pairs of glasses.
  • Styles and Colors. Whether shatter-resistant lenses, bifocals, progressive, or other specific needs, there is most certainly a photochromic lense for you.
  • Save money. No need to buy prescription sunglasses as your regular pair will adjust to outside and then re-adjust inside. You are virtually getting a 2-for-1 deal: sunglasses and regular glasses in the same pair.
Disadvantages
  • Depending on the brand, they can darken and lighten to varying degrees. Some may take longer to change the others.
  • May take longer to adjust in cold weather.
  • They don’t darken as well inside cars, as auto glass has built-in UV protection.

Though they may not be a must-have during the colder seasons, if you plan on spending anytime on or near the water, you may want to consider a pair. The combination of direct and reflected light means that it can be much brighter while out on the water than land. Unfiltered glare, water reflection, even brighter boating equipment like sails and windshields can have an impact on your vision and fatigue your eyes. Light intensity on or around water has an even greater impact on younger eyes, and means eye protection should be a priority for a full day in the sun.

While regular sunglasses are stylish as well as practical, there are many advantages to transition lenses that outweigh the disadvantages. Advanced high-quality transition lenses may not necessarily be a splurge, but a sensible solution for many people. Review your lifestyle and how active you are and consider at least trying them on for size!
